Holiday Inn: Bexley, London

This beautiful Holiday Inn has joined The Energy Revolution™ with an installation of a G-GEN™ combined power and heat engine.

In doing so, the hotel is reducing its carbon emissions, energy costs and dependency on the National Grid which will provide more stability against energy markets that are influenced by global, political and socio-economic factors.

The hotel is utilising a G-GEN™ 50 engine to generate their electricity on-site and capitalise from the heat that is released from this generation process. The engine has generated 152,746 kWh’s of electricity & 342,240 kWt’s of heat in a six month period. Additionally, the hotel will benefit from a reduction in its carbon emission by a staggering 79 tonnes per year.

The composition and size of the existing building and plant rooms at the Bexley hotel were such that a G-GEN™ engine could not be installed within the building as with other hotels. However, as the hotel had sufficient electrical and heat demand, this wasn’t an issue that would stop progress.

The team’s vast experience of installs of various sized engines ranging from 20kW up to 550kW G-GEN™ engines came in to play as they identified a suitable location on the premises where the G-GEN™ unit could be installed externally and out of sight of visitors which is customary for larger self-contained units. To enable this to work on this project a special GRP housing was utilised to securely contain the unit along with a 3,000-litre buffer vessel and then connect and feed into the hotel’s power and hot water systems.

The G-GEN™ 50 was built in the factory and test run, before being disassembled, delivered and re-built on-site once the site had been prepared for the engine. A container was lowered into place to operate and it was quickly connected and fired-up.

By utilising the innovative G-FUND™ finance mechanism, the hotel can benefit immediately from the great savings in energy costs, safe in the knowledge they have done their bit to fulfil their green responsibility and support the fight against climate change.
